God’s Thug

Together with Aileen (my friend and former officemate) and her husband Cons, we attended my first mass in Singapore at the Church of the Holy Trinity in Tampines (in the eastside of Singapore). Its blue neon cross reminded very much of the St. Andrew the Apostle Church in Bel-Air, Makati. I was a pastoral worker there serving as a lector/commentator and was active in the parish community before I moved to Singapore.
I particularly liked the sermon of the Singaporean priest which I would like to share. He began by calling all the children to go in front near the altar. As they gathered, he told this story about a grandfather and his grandson.
Once there was a grandfatherwho took his grandson to a park near the mountains to fly a kite.
As soon as the wind blew, the kite went up in the sky. As it flew higher and higher, it disappeared in between the clouds.
The grandfather said to his grandson. "Look your kite is gone. Somebody must have taken it."
But the grandson said. "No, its still there."
The grandfather again said. "Look, your kite is missing. Someone must have stolen it."
But again the grandson firmly said. "No, its still there."
This time the grandfather asked him. "How do you know its still there?"
And the grandson answered while tightly holding on the string of the kite. "I know its still there because I can feel its thug."
Then the priest further went on saying that God is like the kite, you cannot see His face but you can feel His thug everyday in your life.
Then he told the children to place their right hand in their chest close to their heart and asked them. "Can you feel God’s thug?"
At this point, I realized that you do really feel God’s thug in your life. Early that morning I heard someone say that.."Wherever you go, there you are." It means wherever you are you take your past, your present and your future with you but no sooner did it struck me that God is with you always making His presence felt.
Eventhough I’m here all by myself in Singapore, I know God will always be there for me guiding me always.
